The US State Department will soon launch an online passport renewal service for all Americans. The pilot program for October has opened, but you need to act quickly. 

An executive order by President Joe Biden states that the online passport renewal system is based on the "the Secretary of States shall design and deliver an online passport renewal experience that doesn't require any physical documents to mailed"

What is the online renewal process for passports?

You would normally mail a passport renewal. You would mail your application after you have packed your passport.


A $60 fee for expedited services reduces the wait time by five to seven weeks. The Department of State also has special processes for very urgent or emergency travel.


The new passport renewal system allows you to submit your request online, upload a photo and pay electronically. while still waiting a few months. Maybe.


Although the Department of State has not promised expedited renewal of online passports, it is sticking to its 8-11 week estimate regardless of how you apply. Early applicants to online passport renewals reported fast turnaround times, some as quick as two or fewer.


While online applications are easier to process, passport fees will still be applicable: $130 for a book, $30 for passport cards, and $160 for both. Online applicants may also pay an additional $60 for expedited service.


Online passport renewal is possible for anyone

During the testing phase of online passport renewal, the Department of State established strict rules for who can apply. These are the two most important requirements:

  • Renewing passport applicants must be at least 25 years old and have a valid, or expired for 10 years, physical passport.

  • The required passport must be valid for at least nine years, but not more than fifteen years (between 2007-2013).

These are the essential qualifications for online passport renewal. However, the Department of State contains additional caveats.

  • It is impossible to change your name, gender, or birth date.

  • Online renewals are only possible for tourist passports.

  • You must reside in the US

  • Your passport fees must be paid by electronic bank transfer, credit card, or debit card.

  • Upload an acceptable digital passport picture

  • Your existing passport will be immediately invalidated


How do we renew my passport online if eligible?

If you don't have one, you will need to create a MyTravelGov Account online at the Department of State. You don't have to worry about it, the process is faster and more efficient than creating an IRS account.


Go to the MyTravelGov portal. Click the blue button that reads. Log in to your MyTravelGov Account. This will take you to the sign-in page. If you don't have an account yet, click SIGN up at the bottom.


You will need to fill out a quick registration form. This is all you need. However, you can include your postal address which will be required by the Department of State. Once you have completed the CAPTCHA, click on the blue Create an Account button.


MyTravelGov will send you a confirmation email to the email address that you provided in your sign-up form. Click the verification link to confirm. MyTravelGov will then ask you three security questions. 


After you have completed the security questions, MyTravelGov will send you a one-time code via email. This allows you to log in to your account. A helpful tutorial video from the Department of State can help you navigate the MyTravelGov registration process.


After you have created your MyTravelGov Account, you will see a message on the homepage allowing you to choose "Renew Passport".


To begin the process, click the "Renew Passport” button on MyTravelGov's homepage.

These pilot programs are being used by the Department of State to evaluate the stability and performance of its online renewal system for passports. If everything goes according to plan, the department will eventually open the system to all Americans in 2023.
